Crazy Quilt Blocks, III
by Glynda Black

This is my Geisha block.  I liked this print, and I thought it would be fun to use it as my focal point.  You will notice that I've done some appliqued pansies at the bottom of the block.  I had a fabric with some pansies on it, so I cut them out and appliqued them onto a mottled green and blue fabric.  On the piece in the upper left that has the rice bowl, I've put a few pink flowers at the bottom and some leaves from my machine embroidered designs behind the bowl.  Otherwise, that piece is pretty much as it was printed.  I like to let the prints work for me as much as possible.  In the upper right is a white piece of lace that I sewed into a diamond shape.  I added a special button someone gave me to the center of it.

On a previous page, I mentioned that I tatted, and this is a fun little motif of tatting done around a button.  I added a couple of beads to the center of it.  All the machine embroidery covering the seams that you see here are my own designs.  They are more of my 9mm design collection.

This is a silk ribbon bouquet done with lots of French knots.  Notice that I splashed this design over a seamline.  Under the bouquet is a line of purchased trim that looks lke roses.  Along it, I hand embroidered some leaves.  At the end of this line of trim is a square button with a sun design in it.  I used some gold beads to hold it in place.

I thought the Geisha's headdress needed some dangling flowers, so I did some French knots and greenery to trim that up.  Then I used some chenille thread to do some roses.  Silk ribbon leaves complete the flowers.  Above the chenille roses is some beadwork and another half flower travels down the seam line in front of the Geisha.

Here's another flower on this block. Actually, this is a full flower and you can see part of a partially opened bud.  This flower is made of detached chain stitches tacked here and there.  I used three large beads for the center of the flower.  Silk ribbon makes up the leaves of the flower which spreads over several pieces.  As you can see, the flower head comes at a junction of several pieces.  I like the way this flower adds dimension to the design.  To the left of the red flower is another grouping of silk ribbon roses and leaves.  The seam embellishments are mine, of course.
